FORMER Premier Campbell Newman has praised an innovation policy that the LNP has criticised.

Speaking about the Palaszczuk Government’s Advance Queensland initiative, which was yesterday revealed to be spending millions of taxpayer dollars to fund YouTube stars and untested businesses, Mr Newman said it was “good for Queenslanders”.

The research used to design the Advance Queensland policy was commissioned and produced when Mr Newman was in power.

But, speaking in The Sunday Mail, Shadow Innovation Minister Tarnya Smith said it had “failed to live up to the hype and expectations” and was not “of any benefit to Queenslanders”.

However, Mr Newman, who now works in innovation and start-ups, disagreed with his former party.

“I am really pleased for the state that the work of the (then) minister Ian Walker and the officials in the government I led has been pursued,’’ he said.

‘‘I think that’s good for Queensland. I’m surprised the Opposition haven’t pointed this out because they are entitled to,” he said. Queensland’s chief entrepreneur Mark Sowerby said almost half of the Advance Queensland programs were inspired by the initial research but claimed the Palaszczuk Government should be commended for using work commissioned by the LNP.

“I was more worried that they would not take up those ideas which would have been the worst outcome,” he said.

“Josh Lerner (the research report’s lead author) is the best in the world at this and following his advice will have great benefits for Queensland. I absolutely believe this will create jobs for Queensland and it will be worth the investment,” he said.

Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch said the Government was prepared to take the best ideas to grow the sector, regardless of which side of politics commissioned the research.

Advance Queensland includes dozens of grant and co-investment programs targeting start-ups, entrepreneurs, researchers and businesses in a plan to create jobs in innovative and new industries.
